Acania Cocktail Bar & Restaurant located by the boat basin at Brookfield Place near the World Financial Center is as exquisitely designed and compact as Al Capone’s own infamous yacht after which the bar is named. With just under 1000 square feet of interior space to work with, I-Beam had to be inventive with how to optimize the 20’ high ceilings and outdoor patio area. The obvious solution was to create a mezzanine seating area by floating the bow of the Acania over one end of the bar and using the stern as a means to conceal mechanical equipment at the opposite end. Not only does this simple but ingenious solution solve numerous practical problems, but it also provides for a surreal and thought provoking visual from the street, portside patio and indoor/outdoor bar top along the facade. Wide glazed folding awning windows open to the marina and outdoor patio allowing customers to gather and drink from the sidewalk while marveling at how the full-scale yacht hull floats dramatically by inside the building.
